Intervention for Remedial, Special Needs and ESL
Students
Read
Kwik provides all the necessary elements to quickly develop reading skills for
all learners, especially the remedial, Special Needs, and ESL students.

Basic requirements for
fluency and comprehension start with the ability to accurately and rapidly
decode words while reading. To accomplish this, the reading program must provide
a system that works and is easy to understand by student and teacher. This group
of learners requires a daily saturation of those skills needed to obtain reading
success.
National research reports "pull
out programs" have not demonstrated to be permanently beneficial. Research
sites the change from going to a "pull out tutoring program" to
returning to a "classroom teacher". If that "classroom teacher" is not a
strong "reading teacher", the pull out student fails to maintain growth
provided by that "pull out teacher". Seldom are the 2 programs
compatible and research says only, the "classroom teacher" must be a
"strong
reading teacher" to support the remedial students. This suggests the
two programs are different in content and process with a "strong classroom
teacher" being required to provide the skills absent in their basic reading
program, but needed to continue helping the remedial student upon returning to
the classroom.
Why
do schools and districts adopt materials that are so inexact in presentation
that only a "skilled teacher" can benefit the returning student?
Instead of gaining permanent, usable reading skills, students often become
confused and fail to develop necessary abilities.
How
does
Read
Kwik comply with these basic requirements?
-
Provides
precise practice and more practice in many ways, which is what remedial,
special needs and ESL students need.
-
If the
classroom teacher used Read
Kwik pull
out students would receive the same decoding method, regardless of student's reading
skills, mutually
reinforcing the process. This would result in the classroom teachers having
the same strengths as the remedial teacher for 'decoding' skills.
-
Read
Kwik
provides any
teacher, regardless of their teaching knowledge, the tools to be a competent
teacher for decoding with any student, any age.
-
The
system is clearly organized to control letters and letter clusters to
pronounce 90% of all English words.
-
Student and teacher
friendly; entire program is clear, accurate and reliable for everyone.
-
Lessons
on the software are designed for initial teaching & learning, providing
immediate correction and feedback; a process needed by all learners but
especially by this target group.
-
3-Steps, their rules
and application, may be reviewed daily with individuals or groups in 10-15 minutes; a tremendous advantage for all
students.
-
Applying
the system should begin after 4 to 7 lessons on the software to immediately
reinforce the use and benefits of the system.
-
Worksheets for all
lessons are available to provide students with transition from software to
performance in a natural and effective manner.
-
Transition
packets containing paragraphs and short stories by reading level, with words
marked using the Read Kwik marking process, serves several purposes. The
most important is the transition from computer to print to rapidly develop
visual memory for each component of the system for reading fluency. This part of the program
has been amazingly effective with the target group, especially dyslexic
students.
-
Bookmarkers are
laminated 3" x 8" cards and contain the entire 3-Step program to be used at school
and home. This is a constant "tutor" for every student. This
target group will especially benefit from this and other features in the
program.
-
Combination
flashcards are another visual memory feature students can practice with
anyone.
-
6 wall charts for
classroom use are a constant referral for reading and spelling.
-
3-Steps
become 1 step as students control the C, G, Y and vowels with modest
practice.
-
When Combinations
become 1 step, student control will dramatically improve from practice.
-
All
students in this group should read orally as often as possible with
appropriate discussion and group application of the 3 steps. The Teacher's
Guide contains enough information for anyone to conduct a productive
reading group.
Every adult or older
student can competently teach the basic 3-Step decoding process with an
individual or group. There is no guess work or fumbling for the right decoding
solution. This target group will greatly benefit from many pathways for
learning to read.
-
System's
software contains everything for learning basic decoding skills this target
group needs but lessons in software are age appropriate; nothing too
elementary or too advanced.
-
Every adult has a
method to become an effective reading teacher to decode words. In school, if
students move to one or more teachers, they will receive the same 3 step
control; a great reinforcement practice.
-
One
system is used for every age and every ability level. Once learned,
regardless of age, the system works for every reading task for the life time
of the student. No other decoding materials or decoding programs are needed.
-
Any reading material
is a reading textbook when using Read
Kwik
because the reading material
provides story content and Read
Kwik
provides the decoding system. This
target group receives the reinforcement and practice needed to overcome
their reading deficiency.
-
Reading
system is the exact system used for spelling; precisely reciprocal,
eliminating the need for a different marking system for spelling. This
provides this target group with decoding and spelling skills constantly
reinforced.
